I can tell you from experience that working as a corrections officer in the local jail is one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet. There is not a day that goes by that one of the inmates tries to hurt either me, my staff, or a fellow inmate. To make matters worse, the inmates get their hands on drugs or weapons, and we have a dangerous situation that just turned deadly. To be able to stop the flow of these drugs and weapons has been priority one recently.
To be able to keep our jail safe, we first put in a huge police presence at the visitor center. These visitors all know that they are risking their freedom if they are caught trying to smuggle anything into the jail for the inmates. Problem is, many lower-level gang members will do anything for their brothers, even if it means having to serve time in jail to try and get them the weapons or drugs they request.
Surprise cell inspections work, but they do not deter the inmates either because many are serving life sentences, and this does nothing but add time to a sentence they care nothing about. Monitoring the inmates calls was somewhat effective years ago, but today, things have certainly changed for the better.
Once trained on the software, I was able to pick up on chatter from higher-ranking gang members putting out the word to what, who, and when certain drugs were to be brought to the jail. Before these suspects were able to even get on the jail property, we would take them down and frustrate the gang leaders. Thanks to Securus Technologies, we are crushing the problem at the choke-point.
